WHY Faith-Based Counseling (FBC)?
History is on our side. This is an important concept to bring to light; not just because the work is done in the name of the Lord, but because the eternal principles that underlie all healing process are spiritual and intangible in nature. Medical doctors readily admit that medicine does nothing more than facilitate the body’s healing itself, a miracle by definition. And in a long run, psychologies merely guide the client back to all that is real and true; back to reality, and back to themselves, by giving up all that is false and untrue – the same objective as FBC.
The Established Treatment Industry (ETI) generally acknowledges that at the root of all discontent is the client’s inability to meet his or her most essential needs; and psychologist believes that the client’s primary need is to love and be loved. The foundation of all Faith-Based Counseling (FBC) programs is love; love of God, self and others, the essence of the “………two commandments.” FBC understands the value of providing their clients with the sustained fellowship necessary to create a sense of “home” and belonging.
The second most essential need identified by the ETI is the client’s need to feel worthwhile to themselves and to others. FBC maintains that these needs can be significantly fulfilled when a client gains greater sense of who they are, why they’re here and where they’re going; coupled with the peace that comes from accepting responsibility for their thoughts and actions, and the harmony that comes from service to God, family, country and the community. FBC assists the client in understanding that only the truth (those principles, which are real, true, and eternal) will “…….. set you free.”
Whiles ETI focuses its efforts on the mind and or behavior of the client. FBC focuses its efforts on the heart and soul of the client; with belief that if these two are on track, the mind will become teachable, inappropriate behavior will become less desirable, and the client will begin to hunger and thirst for that which is real and true.
ETI and FBC guide the client through the therapeutic process; in the ETI it’s therapist that provides guidance and direction, with FBC the client is encouraged to seek guidance and direction from the Lord. The client seeks the guidance in order to find the way to the truth in order to have life the deserved.
Similarities Between FBC and ETI
Although Established Treatment Industry (ETI) and Faith-Based Counseling (FBC) differ in approach, the desired outcome is essentially the same: to assist the client in fulfilling their most essential needs while simultaneously coming to grips with reality. Even though there are many differences between ETI and FBC, it is equally true there are many similarities. The recognition and acknowledgment of these similarities should encourage the ETI to be more accepting of FBC, and empower faith-based counselors with the knowledge that FBC works.
Why FBC Has an Edge?
One of the reasons that traditional forms of treatment have been less-than-successful in treating chronic substance abusers, the homeless and former offenders isn’t because these methods aren’t valid, but because of the sheer volume of symptoms displayed (low self esteem, self-destructive attitudes, explosive anger, paranoia, hostility, manipulative and controlling behavior, etc.); the scope of the root causes behind them (dysfunctional families, absentee parents, chemical imbalances, physical, emotional and or sexual abuse, etc.); and the various behaviors manifested (substance abuse, sexual abuse, criminal activity, poor work habits, poor study habits, etc.). In essence, there are so many factors working against the client that may have concluded that it’s going to take a “miracle” to salvage these populations. Since “miracles” fall into the realm of religion and not the sciences, FBC becomes more apparent choice when working with some populations of soul-at-risk. Just because the miraculous must largely be accepted on faith, doesn’t make it any less real than anything else that is abstract, unseen or challenging to comprehend, that is infinite, galaxies, sub-atomic particles or quantum physics.
In closing, faith-based counseling (FBC) represents itself as an alternative to, not a substitute for, the established treatment community’s approach to wholeness. FBC acknowledges that the client with serious substance abuse issues may still need the critical care of a medical facility. Clients who are seriously depressed, psychotic or who pose a threat to themselves or others may need a referral to a reputable mental health care provider.
